Oh My God, Bun

Well well well. I know y'all were wondering why I had not posted my view on Bun's sudden shift to Rust.

Well here we go.

And I'm going to start with:

WHAT THE FUCK IS WRONG WITH YOU JARRED SUMMER?

Don't Get Me Wrong

Bun is a great tool. Not a bad thing.

But Jarred, you just woke up one day and said: "Hey Claude, can you moul over all the Zig code we have and turn it to Rust?"

Damn. Bet you me that caused you a lot of tokens. Because I use Claude free plan and that thing ends FAST AF.

But that was not a problem.

When I saw the PR first on Reddit, I thought: "Naaa, this is just shit people post for upvotes."

Then I visit X after like three days and see him on X hyping the rewrite.

Let Me Give You an Honest Review

That day I will make a Python equivalent to Piggy TS. That will be 90% Z.ai written code.

Mine takes like 14 days — and that is just code writing. Because I get ideas mid-writing. Who is gonna blame me?

Come On, Jarred

I use Claude Code Sonnet 4.6. My company bills that. I'm not rich to pay 200 fucking dollars a fucking month.

That is about 26,000 KSH a fucking month. I'm earning half that at this time in my life. Kill me. No problem.

But just understand this: if you decide to ship at AI speed — and surprisingly, Claude is fucking fast at doing things — ship it in tiny versions.

Something like:

  • bun v2.0.0-beta-rust-rewrite-v1

Not 1 million plus lines of Rust code that makes absolutely zero sense.

Don't Hate Me

SaltyAOM, you are still my mentor. You like Bun. I'm not going to kill that.

But please, just look at it from our side.

I like Bun. But what makes Bun Bun is losing its sense.

Bet you me, in like three years you will hear something like: "Jarred Sumner is laid off at Anthropic because Claude coded better than him."

Wait, does he even still code? Uhuh. He himself can answer that.

Where Do I See Bun in Three Years?

Honestly? I don't think I will see it there.

Maybe I will see Deno (something to fix Deno?).

Bun right now is just fucked up. Everything Jarred Sumner is doing — maybe, maybe it's Claude Code PR team telling him: "You must use Claude Code to write all code."

We don't know that. And maybe that is the case.

But we act on what we know. And that is: Bun is in deep fire right now.

Have I Tested the Rust Bun?

Personally? No.

And I'm not in a rush to test it.

Why, you might ask?

My laptop is kinda full. So I deleted stuff. Unfortunately, Bun was one of them.

Will I test Bun Rust? Not in the near future.

Because well, I'm making nth runtime. And I will use nth runtime together with pnpm, vitest, and stuff.

Is Bun an AI Slop?

The answer to this is a bit jiggy wiggy.

But my take is: No. It is not an AI slop.

It is just a good old OSS material caught up in a fast-moving train. And it is not stopping anytime soon.

Because well — I just bumped Jarred Sumner is convincing people on X that the Rust rewrite passes 98% security checks.

Bro, have you tried it on Windows?

I don't know. And would not like to know that.

Because unfortunately, I am on Windows. And I develop things that must work on Windows.

And damn it — Windows is a fucking nightmare compared to Linux.

My Motto

One thing. Do one thing. Do it well.

Let's say one day an indie dev makes a PR in Nothing Browser — the C++ thing.

First, that code — you darn have to prove to me it works. And especially if you have touched the golden files (fingerprint spoofers).

Bro, you will have to convince me it works. Have tests. Have screenshots.

And if you go through all that to get a PR in my C++ binary repo, I will accept it. Or deny it.

But I must REPLY to it either way.

About AI-Written Code

See, I did not mention anywhere that I will reject AI-written code. Kill me.

But if Claude can make my fingerprint look like Brave's? Boy, I'm merging that shit.

Hate me? No problem.

I'm so sorry to y'all. But as I said: I don't take OSS projects as a joke.
